Understanding OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves unwanted thoughts, images, or urges and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals used to reduce distress or prevent feared outcomes. Compulsions can include checking, washing, seeking reassurance, or reviewing events in your mind. The temporary relief can keep the cycle going.

Treatment focuses on understanding this pattern and learning different ways to respond to obsessional doubt and discomfort.

Anxiety & Panic

Anxiety can show up as persistent worry, avoidance, or feeling on edge. Panic attacks are sudden surges of intense fear that may include a racing heart, dizziness, or shortness of breath.

We’ll explore your experiences and the patterns that maintain anxiety, then practice skills to respond more flexibly and re-engage with activities that matter to you.

Treatment Approaches: CBT, ERP & I-CBT

Dr. Mason’s OCD treatment approaches include CBT, ERP, and I-CBT. Dr. Brazee also works with clients experiencing OCD. Treatment approaches vary by clinician, and we can discuss the options that fit your needs when you contact us.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) explores how thoughts, emotions, and actions interact. Treatment targets patterns such as avoidance and rituals and builds practical ways to respond differently.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a form of CBT and a first-line psychological treatment for OCD. You and your therapist plan practice approaching triggering thoughts or situations while reducing compulsions, including mental rituals. The aim is to change your response to discomfort and uncertainty, rather than obtain complete certainty.

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) is an OCD treatment that examines how obsessional doubts are created. It helps you recognize when imagined possibilities take priority over what you can observe in the present. We can discuss whether this approach fits your needs and treatment history.

A Plan Built Around Your Goals

We’ll begin by understanding your symptoms, previous treatment, and what you want to change. Your clinician will discuss treatment options with you and develop a collaborative plan, with practice between sessions and regular reviews of progress.

In Dr. Mason’s work, mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may also help you respond more flexibly to difficult thoughts and feelings and take steps guided by your values.
